You can install a soundbar, hang a TV on a wood-stud wall, and set up a 5.1 receiver with auto room correction yourself when the gear is suitable, you follow the maker's instructions, and you stop when a wall has to open. Hire an integrator for concealed speaker wiring, projector geometry, Atmos placement, treatment, and controls; hire an electrician for new circuits.

Which jobs can I actually do myself?Link to this section
A soundbar with its wireless subwoofer. Sit it on the console or on the TV mount's soundbar bracket. Run one HDMI cable to the TV's eARC port (the jack that sends TV sound back to a bar or receiver). HDMI Licensing describes eARC as the path that can send high-bitrate TV audio, including uncompressed 5.1 and 7.1 and Dolby Atmos, over a single HDMI cable. Dolby's Digital Plus delivery notes say a product that supports Dolby Digital Plus with Atmos can pass that stream through HDMI or ARC (the older audio return channel) to an Atmos-enabled receiver. Confirm that the TV, the app, and the bar or receiver all support the format you are playing. HDMI also lists Dolby TrueHD among the formats eARC supports. Missing eARC is not, by itself, a reason to hire an installer.
A TV on a wood-stud wall. Match the mount to the VESA Flat Display Mounting Interface (FDMI) hole pattern on the back of the set. That is the display interface; it says nothing about your wall. Use the mount maker's listed wall type, load rating, fastener count, and installation steps. If the wall is steel studs, brick, stone, or a chimney chase, or you cannot meet that listing, hire the mount out.

A hybrid scope needs an agreed handoff. You might place the speakers and connect the receiver while an integrator handles concealed wiring. Before you buy, ask whether they will test and calibrate the equipment you supply. Assign responsibility for cable testing, damaged finishes, and final setup in the proposal.
If you watch with the lights on and talk through the game, a simpler system may meet the viewing requirements. A soundbar and a TV mounted to the listed wall can be the right finished system.
When does in-wall and ceiling wiring need a pro?Link to this section
Before you cut finished drywall, you cannot see the joist, the plumbing vent, or the fireblocking (barriers within concealed framing spaces) from the living-room side. A missed cut can damage a joist, a pipe, or a fire assembly. That turns a cable pull into a repair.
Texas licensing exemptions do not approve a cable or routing method. TDLR's homeowner exemption under 1305.003(a)(6) covers electrical work on a dwelling you own and occupy. Municipal rules may override exemptions under 1305.201. Its low-voltage exemption under 1305.003(a)(12) covers work on Class 1, Class 2, or Class 3 remote-control, signaling, or power-limited circuits. Confirm the local requirements for your scope before starting.
Use cable listed for the location you run it, follow that listing and the speaker maker's instructions, and confirm the method with Building Inspections. Belden lists an indoor speaker cable as CL3 (a fire-safety cable rating) under NEC Article 725, for indoor use but not riser or plenum spaces. Match the listing on the jacket to the run (in-wall, riser, or plenum). Do not substitute a cable without the required listing.
In Frisco, fireblocking at chases and holes between floors is part of the residential inspection checklist under R302.11. Include restoration of disturbed fireblocking in the wiring scope. Fireblocking within framing is different from protecting a penetration through a fire-rated wall or floor. The International Code Council explains firestop systems as tested combinations of the assembly, the penetrating item, and sealing materials. Ask the installer and Building Inspections which detail applies to each opening before cutting; ordinary drywall patching is not a substitute for the correct firestop detail.
Frisco adopted the 2023 National Electrical Code with local amendments, effective February 16, 2024, and the 2024 International Residential Code with local amendments, effective March 1, 2026. Self-service permits there cover replacements and some minor electrical and plumbing projects. Additions or alterations go through electronic review. Call Building Inspections at 972-292-5301 and ask which process applies before you open a wall or add a circuit. Hire a licensed electrician for new branch circuits or panel work. Texas uses the 2023 NEC as the state edition as of Sept. 1, 2023, per TDLR.
A typical scenario: the builder already stubbed speaker wire at the right spots. Connecting a receiver and placing speakers on stands is a DIY job if you follow the receiver manual. Fishing new wire through a finished ceiling is a different job.
Plug a TV and soundbar into suitable existing outlets. Assign new circuits and panel changes to an electrician. If the wiring scope includes a network jack, ask for the cable run and connection testing to be included in the proposal.
How should Dolby Atmos height speakers be placed?Link to this section
Plan height-speaker positions before choosing ceiling cutouts. Read the Dolby Atmos layout guide for format and channel counts. Use the table below to test whether a recommended layout fits this ceiling.
Dolby's consumer setup page puts main speakers at seated ear height, about 3.9 feet off the floor, and puts Atmos height speakers in the ceiling firing down, or as upward-firing modules that bounce off the ceiling. Layout names such as 5.1.2, 5.1.4, and 7.1.4 count ear-level speakers, then subs, then height speakers. The installation guidelines allow room-specific adaptations; use the dimensions as planning references.

Upward-firing modules are an option only after checking the ceiling. Dolby’s ceiling guidance calls for a flat, acoustically reflective surface such as drywall, plaster, or hardwood, between 7.5 and 14 feet high; its ideal range is 7.5 to 12 feet. Do not assume modules solve a low, vaulted, or absorbent ceiling. Ask for a layout assessment if your room falls outside those conditions. CEDIA RP22 is a recommended practice for immersive audio design. It replaces vague good/better/best labels with four performance levels so a proposal can name a measurable target.
Can I hang a projector myself?Link to this section
Measure seat distance, screen width, and a clear lens path before you buy a mount. Epson defines throw distance as the distance between the projector and the image. On that page, short-throw is generally 3 to 8 feet from lens to screen, and ultra-short throw is 0 to 4 feet. Those are Epson's general ranges. Consult your model's throw chart or placement calculator for the image width you want, then see whether the lens lands on a structure the mount maker allows.
For the Epson PowerLite Home Cinema 5020UB, Epson advises correcting the projector's physical position and using horizontal lens shift when it is off to one side. Its keystone adjustment reduces the pixels used to form the image. Check your model's alignment and lens-shift instructions before drilling; do not assume its lens can cover any mounting position.
Do this yourself if the projector sits on a rear shelf, the screen is a fixed frame on a clear wall, and the shelf depth hits the model's throw. Hire it out if the screen is acoustically transparent with speakers behind it, if the projector hangs from a finished ceiling, or if west-facing glass will wash the image in late afternoon. Shades belong in that conversation. Lutron Sivoia offers QS wired or Clear Connect wireless control. Opaque fabrics can slide into pile-lined side channels for blackout.
Does auto room correction replace a calibrator?Link to this section
Automatic setup is often a reasonable starting point for a straightforward speaker setup on stands. Persistent problems, a height-speaker layout, a projector, or a written measurement report are reasons to hire a calibrator.
Follow the sequence in the receiver you own. For the Denon AVR-X3800H, the manual recommends six or more measurement positions, up to eight, with later positions within 2 ft (60 cm) of the main seat. The first mic position is used for distance, level, polarity, and the subwoofer crossover. Make the room quiet. Use the microphone position and support specified in the manual. Use your own model's manual for its measurement sequence.
Automatic correction adjusts the signal; it cannot physically add absorptive material or relocate a speaker or seat. If sound remains unsatisfactory, check the setup results and have placement and room reflections assessed before buying replacement equipment. What should I ask an integrator before I hire one?Link to this section
Several remotes can make daily use less convenient. Ask for a demonstration of the receiver, lights, and shades working from the proposed controls. Founded in 2015, Digitalholics operates from Plano. Take this list to the call. If the answers are vague, keep shopping.
- Will you measure the room and mark speaker and screen positions on a drawing before anyone cuts drywall?
- For Atmos, which layout are you proposing, and what elevation from the main seat do those height speakers hit?
- Who pulls any new branch circuits, and who pulls the electrical permit in this city?
- Which in-wall cable listing are you using, and who restores disturbed fireblocking and protects penetrations through rated assemblies?
- If this is a projector, which throw chart, screen width, and model-specific alignment method are you using?
- What is in the written proposal besides equipment: calibration method, control programming, shade fabric, workmanship coverage, and who patches paint?
- After install, who do I call when a TV and a source fail to agree on a video or audio format, and is that person local?
